Plastic Gold

"Plastic gold" is a metaphor that reflects the duality of plastic in our modern society. This material, once considered a revolutionary innovation, has become a symbol of both progress and pollution, and its mass production and excessive use have become one of humanity's greatest environmental challenges.

To help combat this problem, a number of initiatives and recycling networks play a crucial role in addressing plastic pollution. One such initiative is ASSCAVAG – the Association of Waste Pickers of Várzea Grande, an organization created solely by waste pickers who play a key role in tackling plastic pollution in the municipality of Várzea Grande, a metropolitan area of Cuiabá. By organizing themselves, these workers are able to optimize the collection, separation, and recycling of plastic materials, preventing tons of waste from ending up in landfills or the environment.

In addition to helping combat pollution, waste picker associations provide a vital source of income for many families, promoting social and economic inclusion. These initiatives show how unity and cooperation can turn environmental challenges into sustainable opportunities.
